International bronchiectasis researchers reported new data at the American Thoracic Society 2014 conference last week, with important new work in bronchiectasis reported. Highlights of two minisymposia including Dr Anne O'Donnell reporting on new therapy development including new inhaled antibiotics, mucous clearance methods and drugs in the pipeline. Michelle Prickett from Chicago also provided a practical and important update on chest clearance techniques in bronchiectasis. Highlights of the research sessions including identification by the London group of an increase in cardiovascular events in patients with bronchiectasis. The study led by Dr Jenny Quint used the general practice research database to study over 10,000 bronchiectasis patients and found a more than doubling of cardiovascular risk.
